One of the many art challenges I found myself drowning in recently, was one including over 100 challenges for illustrators. This particular day’s challenge was: “Design a Book Cover of your Favorite Classic Story.” Easy! I’m a Dickens fan and I wanted to pay homage to beloved but little known story, Nicholas Nickleby. I’ve been exploring more with using darker washes of watercolor, more layers, and only using a select few colors. It wasn’t quite how I pictured it in my head, as far as the figures’ faces, but I was pleased with old London at night.
Another one of my favorite stories is, To Kill a Mockingbird. I sketched an idea in marker a few months ago for fun, and then decided to take it to the next (watercolor) level. Have you ever read either story? If you were to illustrate the cover of your favorite book, what would it be?
